Cheriyal Painting - Senior Citizen Art workshop

Cheriyal Painting by Artist Sai Kiran Varma. *This is for reference. The workshop image is different.

Overview

The decorative and colorful Cheriyal Folk Art from Telangana is 400 years old and traditionally used for scroll painting to narrate stories of mythology, Epics and rural life to villagers when there was no theatre or cinema hall. The scrolls similar to a film roll were used by storyteller as visual aid along with music and dance with life size Cheriyal dolls and masks . The scrolls with 40-50 panels were painted with bright natural colors and used to be 3 feet wide and 40-60 feet long which can depict entire Mahabharata.

Today Cheriyal art is mostly confined to villages of Cheriyal - about 90 km from Hyderabad and considered as rare and unique form of Folk art. It has been accorded GI (Geographical Indication) status due to the exclusivity and distinct style of portraying charming rural elements, local customs and ancient traditions.
