Indore traces its roots back to 16th century when it used to be a prosperous trading hub between the Deccan and Delhi. Rao Nandlal Chaudhary, founder of the city, named it as 'Indrapur' after Lord Indra, the deity of Indreshwar temple. In beginning of 17th century Maratha Peshwa assumed the full control of Malwa region and Indore became the capital of the Holkar dynasty. Rajawada, Lal Bagh Palace and Sukh Niwas are the excellent architecture representing the grandeur of the Holkar era in Indore. During the days of the British Raj, Indore became princely state with 19 Gun Salute.
Arrive Indore by morning/noon 3:00 PM and proceed to Hotel for check in. Indore is named as cleanest city in India. In the afternoon, we will visit the majestic Rajwada, which has glimpses from the time of famous warrior queen, Devi Ahilya Bai Holkar. We shall proceed to the Bada Ganpati temple which has the biggest Ganpati Idol of the Asia.
Later in the evening explore culinary legacies of Indore by visiting Indore's famous food streets Chappan Dukan and Sarafa. Be sure to try out these delicacies - Dal-Bafla,Poha-Jalebi, baked Samosa, Aloo Tikki-Kachori, Shikanji, kulfi Falooda, Khopra Patties, Malpuas, Maawa Baati, Indori Namkeen, Bhutte ki Kees, big-Jaleba ! Return back to hotel for dinner and good sleep.
In the morning after breakfast, we shall proceed to magical Mandu or Mandva, famous for the romantic saga of Baz Bahadur and Rani Roopmati. The road will slowly ascend to 2000 ft to Mandu that lies high above the Narmada Valley and then gently melts in Malwa Platue. Mandu was earlier known by the name of "Shadiabad" meaning the city of happiness and is the largest fortified citadels of Medieval India.
Founded as a fortress retreat by Raja Bhoj in the 6th century, Mandu was later ruled by Afgans, Mughals and Marathas, who shaped the architectural splendor of Mandu. There is crumbling collection of royal enclaves, palaces, mosque, victory towers, imposing arches, cobbled pathway, bazaars, wells and ponds.
Hear the stories - some true some folklore, admire the architectural grandeur nurtured by 4 different dynasties spanning 700 years. Walk through Baz Bahadur Palace, Hindola Mahal, Champa Baoli, Asharfi Mahal, Rani Roopmati Pavilion and Jahaz Mahal . Magnificant Hoshang Shah's Tomb happens to be the first marble architecture in the country and served as the inspiration for the Taj Mahal in Agra. Proceed to the hotel and enjoy dinner and good sleep.
Wake up in the serene nature of Mandu and witness the breathtaking view of Mandu as morning sun drapes the colonnades with its brilliant amber bringing the monuments alive - a photographer's delight.
Post breakfast, we shall proceed to Maheshwar, capital of Rajmata Ahilya Devi Holkar's empire during the 18th century. The historic town weaves spirituality of beautiful temples and ghats situated on bank of Narmada and was inscribed in Mahabharata and Ramayana as 'Mahishmati'. We shall visit Rajarajeshwara Temple which is a magnificent shrine with '11 Akhanda Jyothi Deepas' - the eternal flame lamps that glows continuously. You shall visit to Ahilya Bai Ghat and Ahilya Fort.
Maheshwar is known for India's finest hand loom fabric traditions. We shall visit a handloom of colourful Maheshwari sarees. In the evening, admire the exquisite beauty of Maheshwar and river Narmada during a boat ride. We would soon appreciate why Maheshwar ghat is the most picturesque in the country. After a wonderful evening, we will return back to the hotel for dinner and good sleep.
Wake up in the morning and enjoy the scenic view of Narmada river from the resort. After breakfast, we will drive to Omkareshwar, blessed with one of the 12 Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva. The temple is situated in the Omkar mountain at confluence of the rivers Narmada and Kaveri. We shall also visit sacred jyotirlinga in Mamaleshwar temple, on the south bank of river Narmada.
In the afternoon, we will proceed to Ujjain which is bounded by the holy Shipra river and is considered as one of the seven major Hindu pilgrimage. In Hindu scriptures, Ujjaini is named as Avantika and its origin is ascribed to the mythological legend of Sagar Manthan. In the evening visit Harsiddhi temple which is one of the Shakti Peeths. In the evening the temple is adorned with Deepmalikas and lights 1000 lamps and Candles - divine scene to behold. Return back to the hotel and sleep early after dinner.
Today we shall spend a day in the alleys of Ujjain which was the capital of Vikramaditya, the legendary emperor of ancient India.
Note: If you are interested, attend 'Bhasmarati' and 'Jalabhishek' of Lord Mahakaleshwar which is conducted before sunrise from 4:00 am to 6:00 am every day, you need to book Bhasma Aarti tickets(Subject to availability)online from temple website. You have to reach temple by 2:30 AM or before and stand in a well-organized queue. We would arrange required transport to the temple. Tickets of Bhasma Aarti to be self-booked separately at additional fee more than a month in advance based on when ticket booking opens.
Post breakfast, we shall visit Sandipani Muni Ashram, where Lord Sri Krishna and Balaram got education with their friends. We shall proceed to Mangalnath Temple, one of the oldest in Ujjain and Kal Bhairab Temple. At Ram Mandir Ghat of Shipra river which is one of the four locations where the Kumbh Mela takes place every 12 years you can take a dip in the river. We shall return back to hotel for lunch. In the afternoon visit Vedh Shala or Jantar - mantar . It is an observatory built by Maharaja Jai Singh II in 1725 which consists of 13 architectural astronomy instruments. Visit Mahakaleshwar Temple, which is constructed for 1400 year by different ruling dynaties and influnced by Paramara, Chalukya and Maratha styles of architecture. The lingam at Shri Mahakaleshwar Temple is one among the twelve Jyotirlinga in the country. Proceed to Chintaman Ganesh Temple, an ancient shrine built in 12th century. The Ganesha idol worshipped here is 'swayambhu' (self-manifested). There are artistically-carved 11th-century pillars in the assembly hall that lead to the main temple.Wake up with all the memories in your heart and ready to say goodbye to your friends from this religious, and historical expedition from the 'Heart of India'.
Post breakfast, drive to Indore airport to take return flight post 1:00 PM.
