Kutch, one of the most ecologically eclectic district of the state is a celebratory land of art, crafts, music, dance, people and nature. The Great Rann of Kutch is a periodic salt flat placed in the ‘Thar Desert’ in the Kutch District of Gujarat. This barren ground is the largest salt desert in the world. Rann stands for a desert and `Kutch’ for `katchua’ or a `turtle’.

During the full moon night of the winters amidst the astonishing and contrasting landscape each year a convivial extravaganza brimming with hospitality, vigor and traditional flavor of the area is hosted and known as the Kutch or Rann utsav. This gala festival is organized in Kutch which takes one around the natural grandiose while introducing the visitor to the autochthonous cultural and ethnical flavor of the people.

The desert festival is an ideal occasion to experience the zest and peculiarity of the people through a celebration of life. Join us in Kutch-Rann Utsav, a must visit destination once in lifetime, on small-group tour specially designed for 50+ aged and senior citizens.

Detail Itinerary

  • Arrive Ahmedabad, capital of Gujarat and be welcomed by the alluring city swirling up and around you, from the riverbanks of Sabarmati and into the horizon, within the temple spires and rising into the sky. The city never fails to charm with its gorgeous architecture, delicious culinary and modern culture. Proceed towards hotel for check-in and after some rest, explore the grace and charm of history hidden behind the façade of a modern city.

Evening is free at your leisure. Soak in the apex of Gujarati culture as you tour the city by your own. Relish your taste buds with fafra, methia, sev mamr. You may go for shopping to Laws Garden , where Bandhani, mirror work, block print fabrics, embroidery, beadwork and applique, whichever you are fan of, Ahmedabad is a shopping paradise for you. Return back to the hotel and enjoy dinner before retiring for a good night sleep.

  • During morning hours, we will begin our journey from Ahmedabad to Bhuj by road. Upon reaching Bhuj, proceed to hotel, enjoy your dinner and go for a good sleep.

Note: If you want to avoid road travel from Ahmedabad to Bhuj, you can opt for ex-bhuj package in which you must arrive on day 2 - afternoon, by flight from your hometown to Bhuj or travel by train from Ahmedabad to Bhuj. In ex-bhuj package, you leave from Bhuj on Day 6. You have to pay extra for your train/flight ticket to/from Bhuj. Your ahmedabad stay and meals for Day 1 and Day 6 are not included in ex-bhuj package. For Day 2 - only dinner and for Day 6 - only breakfast are included in ex-bhuj package.

  • Today post breakfast, proceed to Hodka - the venue of Rann Utsav, perched on the edge of the Rann of Kutch, in the heart of the Banni grassland. Hodka is a 'vibrant' hamlet in every sense of the word. An array of distinct endowments connects the visitor to the traditional assets of the communities here. Architecture and arts, music and dance, textiles and cuisine, unique panoramas and topography lend a surreal magnificence to the distinct beauty of Banni region. Witness the making of finest embroidery work and leather craft of this region which is believed to have inhabited around 300 years ago by the Halepotra clan.

In the evening explore White Rann to experience the grandeur of sunset. This remarkable place consists of the world's largest salt desert and what makes it even more amazing is that the salt desert is underwater during the main monsoon season in India. For the remaining eight months of the year, it's an enormous stretch of packed white salt. Spend the evening gazing at the gorgeous full moonlight in this virgin desert.

Return back to the tent stay to witness cultural programs and dinner.

  • As the bright sunshine rise up to start up a new day, spend time for shopping of colorful kutchy handicrafts and embroideries that tell us the story of a community, and their ancient textile traditions.

Gear up to visit the villages of Kutch, home to numerous pastoral nomadic, semi-nomadic tribes. Visit Nirona Village famous for its Rogan Art, an ancient skill with its origins in Persia, came down to Kutch and a family of traditional artists has steadfastly kept this intriguing craft alive for over three centuries, protecting it from vanishing into the folds of history. Meet the Luhars in Nirona, who have been preserving the craft of making copper bells over seven generations. We shall visit Kala Raksha located in Sumrasar Sheikh village, who makes exquisite hand embroidered and patchwork products using only natural fibres and natural dyes.

In the afternoon, visit Bhujodi, a major textile center of Kutch, with the vast majority of the 1200 inhabitants involved in textile handicraft production. Meet weavers, tie-dye artists and block printers, most of whom belong to the Vankar community. Explore Ashapura Crafts Park, an interesting place exhibiting famous Kutch embroidery and local architecture with environmental awareness.

  • As the fresh rays greet you in the morning with a smile, get ready for exciting day walking in the alleys of palaces of Bhuj. Visit Aina Mahal which is an 18th-century palace in Bhuj and located next to the Prag Mahal. The walls of the palace are of white marble covered with mirrors separated by gilded ornaments with shades of Venetian glass. Prag Mahal is a palace which was built in 19th century, by the great designer Colonel Henry Saint Wilkins in the Italian Gothic style. The palace was commissioned by Maharaja Pragmalji II and has been a joint contribution of both Indian artisans and foreign workers. The entire palace is made from Italian marble and sandstone, the grand durbar hall with its classic statues and chandeliers are the highlights of the Prag Mahal.

In the afternoon, proceed to Vijaya Vilas Palace, the famous one time summer palace of Jadeja Rajas of Kutch located on the sea-beach of Mandvi. The palace is built with red sandstone. It has all the elements of Rajput architecture and draws largely on the plan of palaces of Orchha and Datia. The central high dome on the pillars, the Bengal domes on the sides, the windows with colored glass, carved stone 'jalis', domed bastions at the corners, extended porch and other exquisitely stone-carved elements, make the palace worth visiting. Spend a pristine and tranquil evening, watching sunset by the Arabian sea, at golden-brown sand of Mandvi beach.

  • As the morning birds wish us to stay blessed with a new day, we will have breakfast and proceed to Ahmedabad.

Note: If you have opted for ex-bhuj package, then you will be dropped to Bhuj airport/railway station today.

  • Vibhavana Jaiswal Mumbai I don't know how to thank 50+ Voyagers for the experience my mother got on her first ever trip to Kerala that too alone. Although I havnt experienced it but I could see the spark in her eyes, listen to the beautiful stories of her trip, the amazing experience she had during the trip. She is appreciating day and night about the trip, the crew members- how they took care of the travelers and how polite they were during the entire duration of the trip. She appreciated the places where she stayed and the food she had. She is very particular about things but, she has given 100 out of 100 to this trip. She made new friends. She has got rejuvenated and expressed that she will go on another trip soon. All thanks to you and your concept. Thanks a tonne for everything and sorry for the inconvenience caused to the team because of my frequent calls when her cell got damaged. You all were kind., patient, polite, caring and helpful. It was indeed the best decision that we took.
